Parliamentary Outreach Program

  1. Birla to inaugurate Parl Outreach Program for the empowerment of Panchayati Raj institutions of JK
  2. The Parliamentary Outreach Programme for the Empowerment of Panchayati Raj Institutions is a unique initiative of Lok Sabha Speaker.
  3. A first of its kind Programme, it is intended to strengthen the institution of governance and planning at the grass-root level.
    The first such Outreach Programme was organized at Dehradun, the second Outreach Programme was organized at Shillong for the State of Meghalaya and the other North Eastern States.

Luxury Boat Service

  1. The 170 km long Jhelum river in Srinagar is set to get its very own luxury bus-boat service.
  2. The first-ever trial run of an air-conditioned water bus took place in July
  3. It has rekindled the hope of providing a possible alternate mode of transportation of the once buzzing nerve center of business in Kashmir.

Ladakh adopts State Animal and Bird

  1. Ladakh adopted two endangered species, snow leopard and black-necked crane, as State animals and State birds.
  2. The snow leopard (Panther unica) and black-necked crane (Grus nicricollis) shall be the State animal and State bird respectively of the UT of Ladakh.

Cow: National Animal

The Allahabad High Court said that the cow should be declared the national animal and that Gau Raksha (cow protection) should be included as a fundamental right of the Hindus.

World’s highest motorable way

  1. A road connecting Leh to the Pangong Lake was inaugurated on August 31, 2021.
  2. The stretch passing through the Kela Pass at 18,600 feet is the world’s highest motorable way.
  3. The road was constructed by the 58 Engineer Regiment of the Indian Army.
  4. It will reduce the distance between Leh (Zingral to Tangtse) to Pangong Lake crossing the Kela Pass by 41 km

Equitas Small Finance Bank

  1. Equitas Small Finance Bank (SFB) has launched a new initiative that enables Google Pay users to book fixed deposits (FDs) on Google Pay in just 2 minutes without opening a bank account.
  2. This functionality of booking FDs will be available for Google Pay users who are using the app from Android devices.
  3. Collaboration between SFB and google way was done ahead of the SFB’s 5th anniversary on September 5th, 2021.
  4. Under this functionality, the principal and interest of the FD will go directly to the Google Play user’s existing bank account once the FDs are matured.

Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) report

  1. India’s air pollution levels have expanded geographically over time and increased so much in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh that an average person is now losing an additional 2.5 to 2.9 years of life expectancy, according to a new report.
  2. India is the most polluted country in the world, with more than 480 million people or about 40% of its population living in the Indo-Gangetic plains in the north where pollution levels regularly exceed those found anywhere else in the world by an order of magnitude, stated the University of Chicago’s Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) report.
  3. The study by the varsity’s Energy Policy Institute ascertains how much longer a person can live if they breathe clean air.

Government to split accounts to tax Provident Fund income

AT1 bonds

  1. State Bank of India (SBI) said it raised 4,000 crores via Basel-compliant Additional Tier 1 bonds at a coupon rate of 7.72%.
  2. This is the first issuance of AT1 bonds in the domestic market since SEBI put in place new regulations.
  3. The issue garnered an overwhelming response from investors with bids over 10,000 crores received against a base issue size of 1,000 crore which is an indicator of the trust the investors place on the bank.
  4. The bank said the coupon rate of 7.72% is the lowest pricing ever offered on such debt, issued by any Indian bank since the implementation of Basel III capital rules in 2013.

Brazilian viper venom

  1. Brazilian viper venom may become a tool in the fight against coronavirus
  2. Component of snake venom was able to inhibit a very important protein from the virus
  3. Brazilian researchers have found that a molecule in the venom of a type of snake inhibited coronavirus reproduction in monkey cells, a possible first step toward a drug to combat the virus causing COVID-19.
  4. The molecule produced by the jararacussu pitviper inhibited the virus’s ability to multiply in monkey cells by 75%.

Li-ion Battery Cells

  1. Lucas TVS Ltd. and U.S.-based 24M Technologies Inc. are setting up a 2,500-crore factory near Chennai for making semi-solid lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery cells.
  2. The plant, which will produce the battery cells initially for the Indian market, will begin commercial production by the second half of 2023.

Ubreathe Life

  1. World’s first Plant-based smart air-purifiers called “Ubreathe Life” by the scientists of Indian Institutes of Technology, Ropar & Kanpur, and Faculty of Management Studies of Delhi University.
  2. This product is being developed by Urban Air Laboratory which is a start-up company of IIT Ropar.
  3. Product is being claimed as the world’s first, state-of-the-art ‘Smart Bio-Filter’, which can make breathing fresh.

2021 PH27

  1. The Astronomers at the Carnegie Institution for Science (CIS) announced the discovery of the fastest orbiting asteroid ever spotted in the solar system.
  2. Dubbed as “2021 PH27”, the space rock, which is 1 kilometer in diameter, completes its orbit in just 113 Earth days.

ZAPAD 2021

  1. A contingent of 200 Army personnel will participate in the multinational Exercise ZAPAD 2021 being held at Nizhniy, Russia from September 3 to 16.
  2. Of the 17 countries invited for the exercise, there are nine participating countries and eight Observers including China and Pakistan.
  3. ZAPAD 2021 is one of the theatre-level exercises of the Russian armed forces and will focus primarily on operations against terrorists.

International Day for People of African Descent

  1. UN General Assembly had adopted the resolution to establish the International Day for People of African Descent in December 2020.
  2. The resolution also recalled two similar UN initiatives namely, the 2001 “World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance” that was held in Durban, South Africa as well as the “declaration of International Decade for People of African Descent” which will run till 2024

IMF funds to Sri Lanka

  1. Sri Lanka has received $787 million from the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) special drawing rights (SDR) allocation and $150 million from Bangladesh Central Bank as a currency swap arrangement, boosting the island nation’s depleting foreign exchange reserves as it struggles to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.
  2. The IMF distributed a total SDR allocation of equivalent to $650 billion among its member countries on August 23, in proportion to their existing quotas in the IMF.

India’s Presidency ended in UNSC

  1. India’s month-long Presidency of the powerful United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has ended with ‘substantive’ outcomes on key global issues including a strong resolution on the situation in Afghanistan, which demanded that the Afghan territory not be used to threaten any country or shelter terrorists.
  2. India, currently serving a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the 15-nation Security Council, assumed the rotating Presidency of the UN body for August.
  3. The Presidency ended with the first resolution on the situation in Afghanistan, following the takeover of Kabul by the Taliban

ILO Report

  1. Over 4 billion don’t have social protection: UN
  2. In a report on the state of social protection globally, the UN’s International Labour Organization said that 4.1 billion people were living without any social safety net of any kind.
  3. Social protection includes access to health care and income security measures related especially to old age, unemployment, sickness, disability, work injury, maternity, or the loss of the main breadwinner in a family, as well as extra support for families with children.
  4. In 2020, only 46.9% of the global population benefitted from at least one such protection, according to the report — ILOs first on the subject since 2017.

Emergency in California

  1. U.S. President Joe Biden declared an emergency in California and ordered federal assistance to boost local responders’ efforts to battle the Caldor fire.
  2. The fire has been burning in the Sierra Nevada range since mid-August and still threatens homes and businesses near Lake Tahoe, abetted by gusty winds and bone-dry conditions.
