World’s highest movie theatre

  1. The world’s highest movie theatre has been inaugurated in Ladakh, which got its first-ever mobile digital movie theatre in the Paldan area of Leh, at an altitude of 11,562 feet
  2. The mobile theatre was opened in a bid to bring a cinema-watching experience to the remote parts of Ladakh.

Gati Shakti Scheme

  1. Gati Shakti will be a National Infrastructure Master Plan for our country which will lay the foundation of holistic Infrastructure.
  2. This scheme of more than 100 lakh crores rupees will result in new employment opportunities for lakhs of youth.
  3. The plan will help raise the global profile of local manufacturers and help them compete with their counterparts worldwide.
  4. It also raises possibilities of new future economic zones.

Bangabandhu Media Center

  1. The Press Club of India here will soon have a media center named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, founder of Bangladesh.
  2. The initiative coincides with the ‘Mujib Barsho’ centenary celebrations currently underway in Bangladesh and India.
  3. The Bangabandhu Media Centre, equipped with digital facilities and an exhibition hall, will be set up on the first floor of the Press Club building on Raisina Road.

HDFC Life to acquire Exide Life Insurance

  1. HDFC Life will acquire a 100% stake in Exide Life Insurance from Exide Industries via issuance of 8,70,22,222 shares at an issue price of 685 per share and a cash payout of 726 crores aggregating to 6,687 crores.
  2. The process for the merger of Exide Life into HDFC Life will be initiated on completion of the acquisition
  1. The World Health Organisation has warned that a “variant of interest” named Mu,  shows signs of possible resistance to vaccines.
  2. Mu – also known by its scientific name as B.1.621 – was first identified in Colombia in January 2021, and since then, there have been “sporadic reports” of cases and some larger outbreaks in South America and Europe.

NASA’s newest Mars rover snags first rock sample

  1. NASA’s newest Mars rover has successfully collected its first rock sample for return to Earth
  2. A month ago, Perseverance drilled into the much softer rock, and the sample crumbled and didn’t get inside the titanium tube. The rover drove a half-mile to a better sampling spot to try again

Hurricane Ida

  1. Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana, US. It is an extremely dangerous Category 4 storm and one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the US.
  2. It will test the hundreds of miles of new levees that were built after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina (2005), which made landfall 16 years ago in the US

Indian biologist wins global award in turtle conservation

  1. Indian biologist Shailendra Singh has been awarded the Behler Turtle Conservation Award for bringing three critically endangered turtle conservation species back from the brink of extinction.
  2. For some species, such as the Red-crowned Roofed Turtle (Batagur kachuga), Northern River Terrapin (Batagur baska), and Black Softshell Turtle (Nilssonia nigricans) Dr. Singh and his team’s efforts are the last hope for their wild survival in the country.

Extended Troika

  1. The Extended Troika is a Moscow-based dialogue initiative solely focused on consultations towards finding a negotiated solution in the absence of violence and such disconnects risk derailing the entire vision shared by each of the members
  2. China  reacted positively to a Russian proposal to convene a new meeting of the ‘Extended Troika’ on Afghanistan in Kabul

  1. Central banks in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and South Africa will conduct a cross border payments trial using different central bank digital currencies (CBDC) to assess if this allows transactions to be settled more cheaply and easily,

North Korea rejects Chinese vaccines

  1. North Korea has rejected around three million doses of a Chinese COVID-19 vaccine, suggesting they should be given to countries in greater need.
  2. The impoverished North was the first country to impose a strict lockdown when it sealed its border in January last year to stop the virus from spreading from neighboring China, where it first emerged before sweeping the world.
  3. Pyongyang insists it has yet to see any cases of the virus.

Praveen Kumar

  1. The 18-year-old Kumar, competing in his debut Paralympics, set a new Asian record with a 2.07m jump to finish behind Great Britain’s Jonathan Broom-Edward
  2. India’s Praveen Kumar clinched the silver medal in the men’s high jump T64 event of the Paralympics, taking the country’s haul to 11 in the ongoing Games here.
