Crime India’ report for 2020

Ranikhet fernery

  1. India’s largest open-air fernery was inaugurated in Uttarakhand’s Ranikhet.
  2. The fernery is home to a large number of fern species, some of which are endemic to the state, some hold medicinal value while some are threatened species that demand care and conservation.
  3. This center has been developed for the conservation of fern species and also to create awareness about their ecological role and promote further research.
  4.  The fernery has the largest collection of fern species, second to only Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute (TBGRI), Thiruvananthapuram.
  5. It is the country’s first open-air fernery in natural surroundings which is not under any poly-house/ shade house.
  6. A seasonal pahadi nala also passes through it, which provides adequate moisture as ferns require shade and moisture to grow and propagate.
  7. It has been developed by the Research Wing of Uttarakhand Forest Department over a period of three years, under Central Government’s CAMPA scheme.

Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate

  1. President Biden convened the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate (MEF), as a follow-up to the convening of that group during his Leaders Summit on Climate in April.
  2. Participants underscored the urgency of strengthening climate ambition ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP 26) in Glasgow and beyond.
  3. The virtual meeting was joined by leaders from Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, the European Commission, the European Council, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and the United Kingdom as well as the UN Secretary-General.
  4. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry chaired a ministerial session with China, Germany, India, and Russia.
  5. Recent climate-related events are termed as a “blinking code red” and noted that the time to act is narrowing — “to the point of no return.”

Geographical Indicator

Hathei chili

  1. It is found in Manipur’s Ukrul district and is known for its unique flavor, and Tamenglong mandarin orange has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  2. Hathei chilly, commonly known as the Sirarakhong chilly, thrives well only in the climatic conditions of the Sirarakhong village, which is situated about 66 km from Imphal.
  3. It has over 200 households and farming is the main occupation of the villagers.
  4. The chillies are grown organically across the hills surrounding Sirarakhong village

Tamenglong orange

  1. Tamenglong Orange / Mandarin (Citrus reticulata) is a unique crop found only in the Tamenglong district of the state of Manipur.
  2. The plant is a perennial evergreen of the Rutaceae family and subtropical in distribution.
  3. Tamenglong Orange is rich in vitamin A, B, C, and phosphorus.
  4. Its consumption has been shown to prevent and fight diseases like cardiovascular diseases as they are rich in potassium and boost heart health.
  5. It contains phytochemicals that can protect against cancer.
  6. It is also full of vitamin C, which protects cells by neutralizing free radicals.

Wipro-Google Cloud Innovation

  1. IT services major Wipro announced the launch of the Wipro-Google Cloud Innovation Arena in Bengaluru to accelerate the adoption of cloud services.
  2. This cloud collaboration space will provide in-house technical expertise, ensure seamless cloud adoption, and accelerate innovation to drive business transformation for customers
  3. This jointly developed innovation center will offer a unique combination of people, processes, and platforms that will collectively create a futuristic experience for customers globally.

AIM and NITI Ayog

  1. Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) NITI Aayog in partnership with Dassault Systèmes’ is all set to rave up the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem across the country.
  2. Statement of Intent (SoI) was signed between AIM and Dassault Systèmes in a virtual event to support various current and future initiatives of AIM programs and AIM beneficiaries in India.
  3. Dassault Systèmes will support and promote AIM beneficiaries including Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs), AIM incubators (AICs and EICs), Atal Community Innovation Centres (ACIC), grantees under Atal New India Challenge (ANIC), and Atal Research & Innovation for Small Enterprise (ARISE).
  4. It aims to promote innovation and entrepreneurship amongst aspiring entrepreneurs, this program will act as a catalyst for an open innovation collaboration to accelerate disruptive innovation in the community.
  5. This initiative will open a new window for select Indian startups as they get access to the Dassault Systèmes global start-up ecosystem- their accelerator program and a chance to connect with peers, industry experts, engineers, designers and be a part of the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab.

Google News Initiative

  1. Google introduced ”GNI (Google News Initiative) Start-ups Lab India”, an accelerator program designed for news start-ups in India.
  2.  Google plans to offer a four-month program to support news start-ups with operational and financial sustainability through exhaustive skills training, coaching and other support.
  3. DIGIPUB News India Foundation and Echos (a global innovation lab) collaborated to design the GNI Start-ups Lab India programme and enable high-quality reporting for domestic and underserved communities in the country.
  4. All news start-ups who publish in Indian languages can avail the program.
  5. News Showcase panels on Discover and Google News, it has included four new languages – Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi – in addition to Hindi and English

North Korea expands Uranium enrichment

  1. Recent satellite images show North Korea is expanding a uranium enrichment plant at its main Yongbyon nuclear complex, a sign that it’s intent on boosting the production of bomb materials.
  2. The assessment comes after North Korea recently raised tensions with its first missile tests in six months amid long-dormant nuclear disarmament negotiations with the U.S.
  3. The expansion of the enrichment plant probably indicates that N. Korea plans to increase its production of weapons-grade uranium at the Yongbyon site by as much as 25%.
