Odisha State Goverment  inaugurated nine extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines, which support the lungs or heart of critically ill patients and allow the organs to recover, in the government-run SCB Medical College Hospital, Cuttack, Odisha.

Data Center

  1. India’s data center industry is expected to double in capacity by 2023, driven by digitalization and rising cloud adoption.
  2. Data centers are a large network of computer servers that are used by organizations across various industries to store, process, and distribute large amounts of data.
  3. Data capacity is measured in megawatt (MW) and gigawatt (GW) and indicates how much data the network of servers is capable of consuming.

Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 2021-22

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 2021-22 Series VI.

Key Points

  1. It will be open for subscription for the period August 30-September 3, 2021.
  2. The nominal value of the bond, based on the simple average closing price for gold of 999 purity of the last three business days of the week preceding the subscription period, works out to 4,732 per gram of gold. T
  3. he Centre, in consultation with the RBI, has decided to offer a discount of 50 per gram less than the nominal value to those investors applying online and making payment against the application via digital mode

Barclays Investing in India

  1. Britain’s oldest wealth management services bank has decided to accelerate its growth ambitions in India with an investment of over 3,000 crores.
  2. Barclays Bank PLC, UK has made an investment of over 3,000 crores in its unit Barclays Bank PLC India to accelerate its growth ambitions in India.
  3. With this infusion, the bank’s total invested capital in India will increase to over 8,300 crores.

Infosys Milestone

Infosys crossed the $100 billion mark in terms of market capitalization, becoming the fourth Indian company and the second Indian software exporter after Tata Consultancy Services to reach the coveted milestone as investors put their might behind the technology

ISRO Announcement of Opportunity

  1. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has come out with an ‘Announcement of Opportunity (AO), seeking proposals towards scientific analysis and utilization of data from all experiments of the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter.
  2. According to ISRO, the data from Chandrayaan-1 had been extensively used by Indian researchers to understand lunar morphology, surface age determination, and composition of the lunar surface, studies on the possible presence of magmatic as well as exogenic water.

Nuclear Energy

  1. The National Ignition facility demonstrated fusion energy equal to about 1.3 megajoules.
  2. Atomic energy can be released in two ways – either by breaking up heavy nuclei, like uranium, into smaller fragments, releasing a whole lot of energy in the process, or by fusing together light nuclei like hydrogen to form heavier stable nuclei and high-energy neutrons which carry a lot of energy that can be harnessed.
  3. The former process is nuclear fission, and it is what happens in established nuclear reactors around the world.
  4. The second route is nuclear fusion, and this is the way stars generate energy.

New Species Added

India has added 557 new species to its fauna, which includes 407 new species and 150 new records, reveals Animal Discoveries 2020, a document published recently by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI). The number of faunal species in India has climbed to 1,02,718 species.

Deepar WLS

Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change notified the eco-sensitive zone of the Deepar Beel Wildlife Sanctuary on the south-western edge of Guwahati.

Key Points

  1. Deepar Beel is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Assam and the State’s only Ramsar site besides being an Important Bird Area.
  2. The wetland has for decades been threatened by a railway track — set to be doubled and electrified — on its southern rim, a garbage dump, and encroachment from human habitation and commercial units.

Global Elite Tag

Mudumalai and Anamalai Tiger Reserve get the global elite tag for best tiger conservation practices.

Key Points

  1. Anamalai Tiger Reserve located at Pollachi near Coimbatore, one of the largest landscapes in the south of Palghat Gap with 4000 sq km of the protected area, and the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the Nilgiris, a biodiversity hotspot of the Western Ghats has now earned a global elite tag in tiger conservation.
  2. It is the Conservation Assured Tiger Standards (CATS) status, a conservation tool for best practices and standards to manage tigers.
  3. Only 14 reserves made the cut including Parambikulam in Kerala, Bandipur in Karnataka, and Manas, Kaziranga, and Orang in Assam, for the accreditation exercise by India’s National Tiger Conservation Authority under CATS.
  4. Well-known reserves like Corbett, Ranthambore, and Bandhavgarh did not get the tag.

Rainbow Snake

  1. Belonging to the genus Melanophidium, the non-venomous snakes, also known as shield tail snakes, are endemic to the Western Ghats.
  2. The snake is largely nocturnal and appears to be black in color.
  3. But when light falls on it, it displays the colors of the rainbow.
  4. It appears to be bright blue at once, soon splitting into violet and indigo and the rest of the colors in the VIBGYOR spectrum.
  5. The Melanophidium genus has four recognized species and this snake could be the fifth.
