1. Black-necked crane and Snow leopard

News Summary

The UT of Ladakh has adopted a Black-necked crane as the State Bird and Snow leopard as the State Animal.

Prelims GS – Environment

Black-necked crane:
  • Scientific name: Grus nigricollis
  • Height : 135 cm
  • Black-necked cranes are found only in Ladakh’s Changthang region.
  • They are listed in Schedule I of Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.
  • They are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

Snow leopard:
  • Scientific name: Panthera uncia
  • Snow leopards are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN-World Conservation Union’s Red List of the Threatened Species.
  • In India, their geographical range encompasses a large part of the western Himalayas including the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh in Eastern Himalayas.
  • The snow leopard is listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES).
  • Snow leopards prefer steep, rugged terrains with rocky outcrops and ravines.

2. Ubreathe Life

News Summary

IT Ropar’s startup company, Urban Air Laboratory, has developed a living-plant-based air purifier “Ubreathe Life” .

Prelims GS – Science & Technology

Ubreathe Life:
  • Ubreathe Life” amplifies the air purification process in indoor spaces.
  • The product is claimed to be the world’s first, state-of-the-art ‘Smart Bio-Filter’ that can make breathing fresh.
  • It has been incubated at IIT Ropar, which is a designated iHub – AWaDH (Agriculture and Water Technology Development Hub) by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.
  • The technology works through the air-purifying natural leafy plant.
  • The room air interacts with leaves and goes to the soil-root zone where maximum pollutants are purified.
  • The novel technology used in this product is the ‘Urban Munnar Effect’ along with patent-pending “Breathing Roots” to exponentially amplify the phytoremediation process of the plants.
  • Phytoremediation is a process by which plants effectively remove pollutants from the air.
  • ‘Ubreathe Life’ effectively improves indoor air quality by removing particulate, gaseous, and biological contaminants while increasing the oxygen levels in the indoor space.

3. Exercise ZAPAD 2021

News Summary

A 200 personnel contingent of the Indian Army will participate in Exercise ZAPAD 2021, a Multi Nation exercises being held at Nizhniy, Russia from 03 to 16 September 2021.

Prelims GS – World News

ZAPAD 2021:
  •  ZAPAD 2021 is one of the theatre-level exercises of the Russian Armed Forces and will focus primarily on operations against terrorists.
  • Over a dozen countries from the Eurasian and South Asian Regions will participate in this signature event.
  • Participating countries include Mongolia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Russia, India, and Belarus.
  • The other eight Observer countries include Pakistan, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Uzbekistan, and Sri Lanka.
