News Summary

Farmers in the Sunderban region of West Bengal are planning to transport the Pokkali variety of rice from Kerala to West Bengal. This move will help the farmers to overcome the crisis situation caused due to saltwater incursion into paddy fields after the cyclone Amphan hit West Bengal.

Pokkali rice variety:
  • Pokkali rice variety is a saltwater tolerant rice variety.
  • It is grown in the paddy fields of Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts of Kerala.
  • Pokkali rice variety got Geographic tag(GI Tag) for its unique variety.
  • This rice variety helps the farmers to grow rice or paddy even in Saltwater areas which ultimately results in higher productivity to the farmers.
