1. World Environment Day celebrated on June 5th

Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed the World Environment Day event, jointly organized by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on 5th June 2021 through a video conference.

World Environment Day:
  • World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5th every year.
  • The theme of 2021: Ecosystem Restoration. (Reimagine, Recreate, Restore)
  • Ecosystem restoration means preventing, halting, and reversing this damage – to go from exploiting nature to healing it.
  • This World Environment Day will kick off the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of mountains to the depth of the sea.

India’s efforts in saving the environment and addressing climate change:
  • India is a strong proponent of climate justice and is moving ahead with a lofty global vision like the founding of the International Solar Alliance for realizing the vision of One Sun, One World, One Grid, and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure initiative.
  • India has been included in the top 10 countries of the world in the Climate Change Performance Index.
  • The Government has resolved to meet the target of 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol by 2025.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, a new product category of Green Room Air Conditioners was launched on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM). The launch event was organized in association with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

  • The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India is implementing Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.
  • PMMSY is a scheme to bring about the Blue Revolution through sustainable and responsible development of the fisheries sector in India at an estimated investment of Rs. 20,050 crores for holistic development of fisheries sector including the welfare of fishers.
  • PMMSY is being implemented in all the States and Union Territories for a period of 5 years from FY 2020-21 to FY 2024-25.
  • PMMSY is designed to address critical gaps in the fisheries value chain from fish production, productivity, and quality to technology, post-harvest infrastructure, and marketing.
  • It aims to modernize and strengthen the value chain, enhance traceability and establish a robust fisheries management framework while simultaneously ensuring the socio-economic welfare of fishers and fish farmers.
Targets of PMMSY:
  • Increasing fish production to 22 million metric tons by 2024-25 from 13.75 million metric tons in 2018-19.
  • Enhancing aquaculture productivity to 5 tons per hectare from the current national average of 3 tons.
  • Augmenting domestic fish consumption from 5 kg to 12 kg per capita.
  • Generating 55 lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities along the value chain.
  • Doubling the incomes of fishers and fish farmers.
  • The increasing contribution of the fisheries sector to the Agriculture GVA to about 9% by 2024-25 from 7.28% in 2018-19.
  • Doubling export earnings to Rs.1,00,000 crores by 2024-25 from Rs.46,589 crores in 2018-19.
  • Facilitating private investment and growth of entrepreneurship in the fisheries sector.
  • Reduction of post-harvest losses from the reported 20-25% to about 10%.

4. Van Dhan Yojana

News Summary

On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, 2021, tribal members of Van Dhan Vikas Kendras in several parts of the country launched a drive to plant more trees.

Van Dhan Yojana:
  • The Van Dhan Yojana or Van Dhan Scheme, a component of the ‘Mechanism for Marketing of Minor Forest Produce (MFP) through Minimum Support Price (MSP) & Development of Value Chain for MFP’  was launched on 14th April 2018.
  • The Van Dhan Scheme is an initiative of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and TRIFED.
  • Van Dhan Yojana has emerged as a major source of employment for local tribals in the recent past.
  • Implemented by TRIFED as the nodal agency at the national level, the Van Dhan startups is a well-thought master plan for the socio-economic development of the tribal population of the country.
  • It is a perfect example of tribal entrepreneurship and demonstrates how cluster development and value addition can help members earn a significantly higher income.

  • 15 such Van DhanVikasKendras form 1 Van DhanVikas Kendra cluster.
  • The Van Dhan Vikas Kendra Clusters provide the Van DhanVikasKendras economies of scale, livelihood, and market linkages, as well as entrepreneurship opportunities to nearly 6.67 lakh Tribal forest gatherers in 23 states and 2 UTs.
